American tenor James Taylor is known for his vocal power, dramatic conviction, and versatility across the operatic, concert, and recital stages. A protégé of celebrated Heldentenor Jon Fredric West, Taylor brings a tradition of vocal strength and expressive nuance to every performance.​

 

A dramatic tenor rooted in the Heldentenor tradition, he has earned acclaim for his performances in some of the repertoire’s most demanding roles.

​Taylor has appeared with major American opera houses and orchestras, including San Francisco Opera, New York City Opera, Virginia Opera, Connecticut Opera, Central City Opera, Hawai’i Opera Theatre, Staatstheater Augsburg, Theater Műnster, the Buffalo Philharmonic, Alabama Symphony, Arkansas Symphony, and Rhode Island Philharmonic.

 

Since transitioning from baritone to tenor in 2009, Taylor has taken on defining roles such as:

  • Siegmund in Die Walküre

  • Tannhäuser in Tannhäuser

  • Florestan in Fidelio

  • Samson in Samson et Dalila

  • Manrico, Don José, Pinkerton, and Canio in leading Verismo and Verdi repertoire

 

Prior to his transition to tenor, Taylor sang over 35 leading baritone roles, including Escamillo, Figaro, Marcello, Germont, Sharpless, and Posa. He has also shown his comic and lyrical range in roles like Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and Danilo in Die lustige Witwe.

His concert credits include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Verdi’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah and Samson, and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.

 

As a recitalist, Taylor has toured Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia, performing Schubert’s Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin, and Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder, notably in the Netherlands and Malaysia.

​He debuted at Alice Tully Hall in Béatrice et Bénédict and at Avery Fisher Hall in Messiah. He is a Merola Program alumnus and graduate of Yale University, with honors from the Hans Gabor Belvedere, Dutch International, Brahms International, and Tchaikovsky Competitions.

 

In musical theatre, Taylor has performed Sweeney Todd, Don Quixote, Carl-Magnus, and others, bringing dramatic versatility to both opera and stage.
